NEW! 2nd Grade Common Core "Merit Badges"
I'm going to use my K-2 merit badges to make a bulletin board this week. I'll post pictures once it's finished!
As promised, I uploaded my second grade Common Core "merit badges" tonight!
Motivate your students to master each standard of the Common Core by working for badges. There is a badge for each Common Core standard. When a student masters the "I Can" checklist, he/she earns the badge. Post badges on paper or felt vests and sashes (easy tutorials included), or charts. Makes a great hallway display, assessment tool, and parent resource!
Included:
-Merit Badges (one for each Common Core standard)
-"I Can.../I Know..." checklists in child-friendly (or parent-friendly!) language.
-Tables correlating the badges to the standards and "I Can.../I Know..." statements.
-Classroom posters with all badges for each competency
-How to make a vest (with pictures)
-How to make a sash (with pictures)

Develop Class Rules WITH Your Students -- Not FOR Your Students
Give students ownership in creating their own class rules!
On the first day of school, spark a discussion about classroom expectations. Ask students what types of rules help them to feel safe and happy. Decide upon five expectations, and put them in positive terms (e.g., "Keep hands and feet to yourself" instead of "No pushing").
Cut and paste these labels onto chart paper. Record the class rules, and have every student sign the chart to seal the promise.
Students will be more likely to follow rules they have set themselves, and their signature holds them accountable. (It saves you some work, too!)
This is the chart I have posted in my room, ready for student input on the first day of school.

Tricky Text Toolbox for Reading Comprehension- A Fun, Hands-On Reading Strategy
Introduce and reinforce reading fiction and non-fiction comprehension strategies with this fun twist on the SQ3R Reading Strategy! Students create foldable paper toolboxes to store their reading comprehension tools. Each reading tool is pictured with a description of a reading strategy. Use to introduce comprehension strategies, and allow students to reference their toolboxes for independent practice. These also may be used as colorful classroom posters!

Frequency and Interval Data Collection Sheet All-in-One
This data collection sheet provides an easy way to identify temporal patterns of behavior and take frequency
and interval (percentage of time) data. Practical, quick data for
resource room and inclusive settings!
1. Assign each behavior a number (e.g., Behavior 1= Profanity, Behavior # 2= Physical aggression) in the boxes at the top of the sheet.
2. Tally under the column for that behavior beside the time of day it occurs. (e.g., If the student uses profanity twice at 1:08, make two tally marks in column 1 beside the 1:00-1:15 interval.)
3. Tally the total number of times each behavior occurs daily, at the bottom of each behavior's column.
3. Calculate the percentage of time the behavior occurs by dividing the number of intervals marked by the number of possible intervals (__/42).
4. The sheet travels with the student all day long. All teachers or a student's one-on-one can tally easily.
(For example, "Johnny" used profanity 5 times at 9:00, 7 times at 9:30, 2 times at 10:00, 1 time at 12:00, and 1 time at 3:00. Frequency = 17. Intervals marked = 5. Five intervals marked out of the possible 42 intervals is 5/42, which equals 12% of the day)
I use this with my Behavior Data Excel Spreadsheet, which calculates a two-week total and average-- perfect for IEP goal monitoring. Check it out here: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Behavior-Data-Tracking-Spreadsheet-That-Calculates-Biweekly-Totals-and-Averages-815616

Behavior Data Tracking Spreadsheet That Calculates Biweekly Totals and Averages
This Behavior Tracking Excel Spreadsheet is great for tracking behavior goals. The spreadsheet automatically tallies frequency totals and calculates a two-week average-- which is perfect for IEP behavior goal progress monitoring scores!
1. Track behavior frequency data throughout the day on an interval tracking sheet (see mine, available for download at http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Frequency-and-Interval-Data-Collection-Sheet-815806) under the DAY 1 tab.
2. Plug frequency data and interval data into the student's colored box on the Excel Spreadsheet. (I print my interval forms on colored sheets so I can quickly tell whose data I am entering).
3. The next day, repeat steps 1 and 2 under the DAY 2 tab. The next day, plug in data under DAY 3 tab, and so on.
4. After entering data on Day 10, click the TOTALS tab to see a total frequency count and percentage of time (interval) average, for the ten days. (You can also view the TOTALS data at any time before the ten day period has ended.)
EASILY CUSTOMIZABLE:
I made "Student1" the name in the orange box on every sheet, so you can do a find/replace (control + F) and change Student1 to your student's name across the workbook, and so on.
At the end of the 10-day period, select File - "Save As." Save a new spreadsheet for the next 10-day period.

ABC (Antecedent Behavior Consequence) Checklist + Intensity & Duration
When tracking behaviors, it is important to note the following things:
Check what happened before the behavior (ANTECEDENT), the behavior itself (BEHAVIOR), and what happened as a result (CONSEQUENCE).
Circle the intensity (1-5 scale) and indicate the duration (in minutes). There is a space below each box to write clarification or tally frequency.
The top of the page provides information about the time of day and setting. This is a valuable tool when formulating Functional Behavior Assessments. Use to help assess the function of the behavior. For example: "When (antecedent), the student will (behavior) in order to (escape/avoid/postpone... or gain access to...)"

- Frequency (how many times the behavior occurred)
- Duration (how long the behavior lasts)
- Intensity (the extent to which the behavior occurs)
- Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (A-B-C, what happens before the behavior, the behavior itself, consequences maintaining the behavior)
- Function of the behavior (what the student gains/avoids as a result of the behavior)
- Setting of the behavior (where and when the behavior occurs)
