Develop Class Rules WITH Your Students -- Not FOR Your Students

Give students ownership in creating their own class rules!

On the first day of school, spark a discussion about classroom expectations. Ask students what types of rules help them to feel safe and happy. Decide upon five expectations, and put them in positive terms (e.g., "Keep hands and feet to yourself" instead of "No pushing").

Cut and paste these labels onto chart paper. Record the class rules, and have every student sign the chart to seal the promise.

Students will be more likely to follow rules they have set themselves, and their signature holds them accountable. (It saves you some work, too!)

This is the chart I have posted in my room, ready for student input on the first day of school.
